Nagpur-Mumbai Super Communication Expressway Transforming Economic Fortune of Maharashtra

          Christened as the ‘Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg’ the Nagpur-Mumbai expressway is the stellar project of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The super communication expressway aims to connect winter capital Nagpur to financial capital Mumbai in a single run encompassing 10 districts and 393 villages en route. Also styled as ‘Samruddhi Mahamarg’ (Prosperity Corridor) the expressway will enable the inter and intra state connectivity, fast mobility of goods & services, better commuting experience, encouragement to industrial development and employment generation on a large scale. It will cover the road network of 701 km in length linking numerous economic corridors, tourism circuits, and sea ports. This mega project ideates not only to set a new benchmark in roadways safety & standards in the country but will redefine the socio-economic landscape in Maharashtra.

Glory to Maharashtra

The Maharashtra state government visions to connect the eastern region with the economic mainstream western region of Maharashtra to create a sustainable economic development in the composite regions. The expressway will render super connectivity for trade by enabling access to JNPT, Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, Bengaluru-Chennai Economic Corridor, Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor, Chennai-Vizag Economic Corridor, and Golden Quadrilateral. This immense connectivity and state-of-the-art infrastructure that the Samruddhi Corridor must bring forth to Maharashtra have energized the potential to the state for the blossoming investment conditions.

The Samruddhi Mahamarg is expected to bring the new dawn for the local economy especially the en routing 10 districts namely, Nagpur, Buldhana, Amravati, Wardha, Washim, Thane, Aurangabad, Akola, Bhiwandi, and Nashik.

The country’s longest expressway shall add 6% to the national trunk and freight connectivity and cover 65% of the consumption market. The entire route is provisioned with optical fibers, gas pipeline, water supply, and solar power grid generating 450 MW energy creating a favorable eco-system for industrial, tourism, logistics, and agro-based business ventures.

Transforming into Land of Opportunities

History has evidenced the growth in trade and economic affairs when connectivity surfaced on grounds and better infrastructure power-bank the supply and demand. Due to lack of infrastructure in place, the Vidarbha (Eastern) region was kept untouched for major economic activities over the years. Hence, the region is rich in minerals, natural reserves, agro-based eco-system, and land. With such a robust infrastructure in place, the eastern region will show efficacy in developing industrial hubs, agro-processing zones, manufacturing units, food-markets, warehousing, commercial sites, residential development, mineral processing, etc. The expressway will transform the region into an integrated focal point for cold-chain, logistics, and warehousing with agro-food malls and aggregation of the contract farming.

Employment Generation and Migration Control

As agriculture continues to be the primary occupation of the populace in the regions along the expressway, agriculture and agro-allied business will mark of chief importance in providing primary and secondary employment to the local inhabitants on a massive scale. Basis on the detailed demographic, geographic, and economic data analysis it is found that the flagship project will impact 36% of the state population in providing direct and indirect employment. This massive employment generation will result in migration control from the local region to metro cities. The region has seen profound migration of local populace in several metro cities of Maharashtra in search of employment or livelihood. The adjoining opportunities along the super expressway are expected to equally balance the development distribution within the state. Special focus on promoting agricultural development will empower farmers in high yielding self-employment or employment in agro-allied businesses.
