Spiked millet is the main crop. Sugarcane, grapes, onions and pomegranates are also cultivated on a large scale. Markets for onions are situated at Niphad and Lasalgaon. Grapes of Nashik are famous with a large produce coming from Sinnar, Dindori, Niphad and Nashik talukas. Grapes are also exported. Sugarcane is also another important irrigated cash crop.

The district has industrial estates at Satpur, Ambad, Malegaon, Sinnar, Peth and Manmad. The five-star industrial estate at Sinnar is a unique feature of Nashik. Spread over 2,700 Ha, it houses about 175 medium-to-large-scale industries and employs about 75,000 people.

Currency printing of all denominations is done at Nashik road. The printing of government issued deposits like Indira Vikas Patra, Kisan Vikas Patra, postal orders, passport etc. is carried out in the India Securities Press run by the Central Government. There is also a record of the existence of a minting machine at Chandwad during Malharrao Holkar's rule.

The innovative project of papermaking from the Eucalyptus tree can be seen at Igatpuri. Shalu (a type of silk sari richly brocaded and embroidered), Paithani saris and Peetambar (yellow coloured dhoti) from Yeola are famous. Malegaon, like Solapur and Ichalkaranji, is an important centre for handlooms and power looms.

Wineries are also well established on account of the large grape production in the district. Nashik is one of the main centres for these wineries, slowly gaining ground internationally. The district provides onions and other vegetables to Mumbai, making it an important business for many farmers.

About 20% of the total district area is covered by forest. The forests are mainly in the hilly regions in the West in the talukas of Surgana, Kalwan, Peth, Dindori and Baglan. Teak wood is primarily found in these forests. The other trees include Indian Laurel, Bamboo, Indian Rosewood, Black Catechu, Indian blackberry, Indian Butter tree.

The ancient name of Amravati is "Udumbravati", prakrut form of this is "Umbravati" and "Amravati" is known for many centuries with this name.
