Transportation

Roadways:

National Highway No. 6 which connects Mumbai and Kolkata and NH No.7 which connects Varanasi to Kanyakumari cuts through the district, which provides link with commercial and industrial centers of the of the country. A good network of 982 km’s of state highway connects the interior parts of the district with the major marketing centers and district headquarters. Besides the above, a network of major district roads, village roads, and other roads facilitates smooth transportation.

Railway:

Nagpur City is the centre point of the country and is connected with metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, and Chennai by rail. Electrified broad gauge railway track connects Nagpur to all four major metros. The length of broad gauge railway line is 270 km and that of narrow gauge railway line is 136 km. Destinations connected included Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Kolhapur, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Jammu, Amritsar, Lucknow, Varanasi, Bhubaneswar, Trivandrum, Cochin, Gorakhpur, Visakhapatnam, Bangalore, Mangalore, Patna, Indore.

Airport:

Nagpur district is well connected by air through Dr.Babasheb Ambedkar International Airport at Sonegaon, located at 7.5 km South of Nagpur City. It is connected to Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune, Bhubaneswar, Raipur and recently with Dubai.

The ancient name of Amravati is "Udumbravati", prakrut form of this is "Umbravati" and "Amravati" is known for many centuries with this name.
