Agriculture

Aurangabad is an agrarian district and Spiked Millet is the prominent crop. Sugarcane is one of the important irrigated crops.

The Agriculture Produce Market Committees are located in Khultabad, Gangapur, Kannad, PAithan, Sillod, Soygaon, Vaijapur and Aurangabad.

Trade and Industry

Aurangabad is thus an important industrial district in Marathwada. Many industrial hubs have been developed under the autonomous body of CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation). Aurangabad, Chikalthana, Walunj, Chitegaon and Paithan have industrial estates. Similarly, Soygaon and Khuldabad have mini industrial areas.

Apart from these, there are cotton mills at Aurangabad and factories like Cosmo Films, Patheja Forgings, Wipro, etc. are operational at Walunj. Large corporates like Skoda, Lupin and Garware have also set up their businesses here.

Under the proposed Special Economic Zone (SEZ), businesses like automobile production unit of Bajaj, electronic goods manufacturing by Videocon, aluminum production of Hindalco and pharmaceutical companies like Wockhardt and Ajanta Pharma will start their manufacturing in the district.

The famous Paithani Sari, named after the Paithan region here, is hand-woven using silk. These saris sport intricately embroidered gold and silver borders. Paithan is also well known for different types of turbans like Mandil, Tukki, Dasanni, and Gujarati style turbans.

In Aurangbad district total Forest Area is 135.75 sq.km. As compared to Maharashtra the forest area of Aurangabad is 9.03%.

The ancient name of Amravati is "Udumbravati", prakrut form of this is "Umbravati" and "Amravati" is known for many centuries with this name.
