Despite being, the largest district in Maharashtra, Ahmednagar has an excellent coverage of road network, connecting almost all the villages in the district having fair road conditions. Compared to the rail, the road network in the district has gained more importance as it has faster connectivity to important cities and to the nearby region. It is directly connected through the National & State Highways to the cities like Mumbai, Pune, Aurangabad, Solapur and Nashik. The length of National Highways, State Highways and Major district roads is 202 km, 1661 km and 6073 km respectively.


Daund to Manmad, a single rail track of Central Railway goes through the district. Total length of this rail track is 197 km and it has 24 railway stations. Puntamba is the only junction on this track leading a 13 km rail track to Sainagar Shirdi. Passenger and goods transportation by railways in the district is limited.

The ancient name of Amravati is "Udumbravati", prakrut form of this is "Umbravati" and "Amravati" is known for many centuries with this name.
